Sept 7, 1862[br] [br] Dear Father and Mother Brothers and Sisters[br] [br] I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am in good health at this time hoping when this comes to have it may find you enjoying the same blessing. I have not had a letter from Eliza Jane since the first of June. She wrote to me that she was bad dissatisfied there and also that she was imposed on and could not get away from there. I received her letter the 20th of August. I have tried to get a furlough and could not do it. If I can hear from her again and her and my children has to be deviled back by infernal scums I will desert the army and come home and die with them. I never knowed what trouble was be fore. I cannot hear from my family much less see them.[br] [br] I have got money now if she had it. We are on a march north towards Memphis Tennessee. I don’t know where we will go to. They say we will have to fight some in a few days unless the Federals leave Corinth before we get there. I want you to help Eliza and the children all you can and you shall not lose anything by that if I should be so lucky to get home. Tell the old lady she and Betty must try to get them down there and take care of them till I get there. Tell Betty I saw Bud. It has been a month or more ago. I run two miles to see him and got to be with him about 10 minutes. He took the cars. They said they were agoing to Mobile. I have not heard from them since. I can go to my fathers in two days from here but I have rather see Eliza and the children more than to see everybody in the world. I feel like they are all the friends that I got in the world. I am determined to come home when my twelve months is out if not before should I live to see that time. I am in as fine health now you ever saw me. My weight is 152 pounds. 256. William9 Lawrence (398).
He was probably the son of John Lawrence and grandson of Henry Lawrence of Charlestown, MA. In 1717 he gave a paper which defended the title of real estate against the heirs of David Lawrence, his wife's first husband, and presumably his brother. David Lawrence was living in 1702. (Wyman's Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown, p. 606.) By a first marriage he had a son William, to whom he gave land in his will and for whom he did not provide a guardian. This marriage probably occurred before 1699 as the will was made in 1720. He married Sarah Whittemore, widow of David Lawrence, as his second wife and by her had three daughters, none of whom was of age when he died, and a posthumous son, Uriah. He made a will at Providence, RI, on 23 May 1720 and died on 24 May 1720. Nothing else appears of record at Providence; and nothing appears of the land he left, other that an arrangement made later by his widow. (Records of Providence, RI; Records of Middlesex County, MA.).
He was born before 1670 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA. He married Sarah Whittemore (394), daughter of Samuel Whittemore (430) and Hannah Rice (437), after 1702 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA. He died on 24 May 1720 at Providence, Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

She was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Rice Whittemore and was born 16 Jan 1682. She married David, son of John and Susanna Lawrence of Charlestown, MA, on 3 Feb 1700. He was living in 1702. (Furnished by Mary P. Whittemore from the papers of Thomas F. Whittemore; Wyman's Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown, p. 1027.) She was born in Charlestown, MA (Paige's History of Cambridge, Massachusetts). She is recorded in the Charlestown church records as having been baptized with her mother ??in the fourth month?? (June) 1687. (New England Genealogical Register, 27:276.) Her second marriage was to William Lawrence, probably a brother of her first husband, David. They had three daughters before his death in 1720, and a posthumous son, Uriah. Presumably she had a son by David Lawrence, as Jonathan is named in her will and not in that of William Lawrence. (Will of William Lawrence, recorded in Providence, RI; William of Sarah Lawrence, recorded in Middlesex County, MA; Guardianship papers of Uriah Lawrence, recorded in Middlesex County, MA.) Her will was dated Nov 1757. In it she describes herrself as of Cambridge and makes her brother, Samuel Whittemore, her executor. In it she names her son, Uriah. The will is signed by a mark. The appraisal was made 25 Nov 1766 and showed personal property to the amount of £25.9s6d. and real estate 'one dwelling house with about one quarter of an accer of land adjoyning ytro £80.' The location of the real estate does not appear. (Records of Middlesex County, MA.) She is described as "widow Sarah Lawrence of Norton." Her son Jonathan lived at Norton, MA, and had a family there. (Wyman's Genealogies and estates of Charlestown; New England Genealogical Register.) Her death at 84 years of age, on 22 Nov 1766, was recorded by Samuel Cookes of West Cambridge, MA. She is described as "Widow Lawrence of Cambridge." (Vital statistics of Arlington, MA, p. 142.).

The will of Thomas Beman, 1638, refers to land bought of Jonathan Birch of Dorchester, MA. (New England Genealogical Register 14:258.) The above Jonathan may have been the father of Thomas Birch of Dorchester, all of whose children were minors in 1654. Thomas Birch was paid four shillings in 1651 for iron work done on the meeting house. He died 3 Oct 1657. In his will, dated 6 Jun 1654, he provided for sons Joseph and Jeremiah, daughter Mary and five children not named. On 31 Jan 1664 the administrator asked that the whole estate be turned over to Joseph Birch, then 21 years of age, and for him to provide for the other children. (Pope's Pioneers of Massachusetts.).

1046. Tristram11 Dodge (532).
The printed genealogies of the descendants of Tristram Dodge mention no daughter, Margaret, and there is no evidence (in 1907) other that Mr. Cooley's statement in the Rathbone Genealogy that Margaret Dodge, wife of John Rathbone, was such a daughter. No Rathbone interest is shown in the Dodge family deeds on the New Shoreham (Block Island) records. Tristram Dodge was one of the original settlers on Block Island and had five acres of land. He was a fisherman from Newfoundland. He traded in Boston in 1648. He was made a freeman on 4 May 1664. He was a sargeant in 1676. He went to Block Island in 1661 and was dead intestate in 1720. He is first known of "at Pulling Point near James Bill," in 1660. This is now Winthrop, Mass. He was in Ipswich in May 1663. In 1668 he returned to Pulling Point and shortly after moved to New London. He settled east of the River Thames near Robert Allyn and George Geer. (Caulkin's History of New London, p. 146.) Richard Haughton (519) was a Shipwright.
"Richard Haughton, a Boston man, desired a lot," (New London records: Town Book No. 1). Though called a Boston man here, the name of Richard Haughton is not found in any of the early records of that place, except in the conveyance of a dwelling house and garden to Sampson Shore, tailor, 27th of 8 mo. 1651, which probably was about the period he moved his family to Pequot. He had married a widow Charlet of Boston and the tenement had probably belonged to her. Haughton had a house lot granted on Foxen's Hill. (Caulkins History of New London, Connecticut, p. 75.) He was in the fight with Uncas in 1657. (do. p. 127). He died in 1682. This event took place at Wetherfield while Haughton was engaged at work as a shipwright on a vessel there. Of his children no regular list has been obtained. Massapeag Neck, a fine tract of land on the river, within the bounds of Mogegan proper, was granted to Haughton by deed of the Sachem, Uncas, on 19 Aug 1658. The laws of the colony prohibited individuals from contracting with the Indians for land; nevertheless the General Court confirmed the grant upon certain conditions, asserting as one reason for their indulgence to Haughton "his charge of children." We infer from this that he had a young and numerous family. Eight children can be traced, of whom three, Robert, Joseph and John are supposed to belong to a first, unknown wife, dating their birth anterior to the settlement of the family at New London (the name of Richard Haughton is found in 1646 among the settlers in Milford, Lambert's New Haven Colony, p. 91). Robert, son of Richard Haughton, died in Milford in 1678. After the death of Katherine, wife of Richard Haughton, in 1670, he married Alice ___________, who survived him and became the wife of Samuel Cromber of Westerley (do. p. 299).

By her first husband she had two daughters, Elizabeth, born 15 Jul 1643, and Mary. She died 9 Aug 1670. (Caulkin's History of New London.) From the court records of 30 Jun 1664, "Mrs. Haughton summons Mrs. Skillinger befor the Commissioners for abusing her daughter in the meeting house. We not finding legal proofs hereof judge it meet that Mrs. Haughton tutor her daughter better and not occasion disturbance in the meeting house by any unmeet carriage to her betters hereafter; and this being the first time enforct it no farther," (do p. 248).

The tradition is not true. Katherine Stuart was descended from the Stuart line of Scotland and she and Sir Joseph Williamson are listed in the Complete Peerage.
