Generation One
1. HENRY1 LAWRENCE (580) was born circa 1590 at England. He married Christian (--?--) (418) at England.1 He married Christian (--?--) (418) before 1618 at England.2 He died before 1647 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.3
     He was a mariner and/or a husbandman.4
     Henry Lawrence (580) was a Mariner? at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.5
     He was illiterate.6
     He was a resident of Charlestown, MA, in 1635. His wife was Christian __________, who died on 3 Mar 1647/48. Their son, John, was born as early as 1618. He owned land as shown by the Charlestown records. (Wyman's Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown, p. 606.)
     In the first division of land on 'Mistick side' on 20 Apr 1638 he received five acres. (Bond's History of Watertown, p. 819.)
     In the pedigree of John Lawrence of Watertown, baptized at Wisset, England, on 8 Oct 1609 (compiled by Horatio G. Somerby) which traces back by wills to Thomas Lawrence of Rumburgh, Suffolk (will proved and dated in 1471), Henry Lawrence of Wisset is described as the father of the above named John Lawrence of Watertown "supposed to be the Henry Lawrence of Charlestown as early as 1635, died between 1638 and 1647." An analysis of dates and records shows this statement to be very doubtful; but Henry Lawrence of Charlestown may have been a son of Henry Lawrence of Wisset and a brother of John Lawrence of Watertown, though this is but a surmise. Somerby's pedigree is printed in Bond's History of Watertown, on p. 1081.7
     After inspecting the matter I have decided that Somerby's Pedigree is questionable at best in linking John Lawrence of Watertown to Henry Lawrence of Charletown. It is also doubtful that the Henry of Wisset is the same as Henry of Charlestown.
     C.E. Banks surmised that Henry Lawrence came from St. Alban's, Hertfordshire.

JOHN2 LAWRENCE (396) (Henry1)11 was born after 1617 at England.12 He was born circa 1620 at England.13 He married Susanna (--?--) (397) before 1642.14 He married Susanna (--?--) (397) circa 1657 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.15 He died circa 1670 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.16
     John Lawrence (396) was a Mariner.17
     He was a son of Henry Lawrence of Charlestown, MA. His age was stated as 36 years in 1654 and 35 years in 1655. He married Susanna __________ before 1642. She afterwards married Thomas Tarball.
     John Lawrence was living in 1669-70. Administration was had on his estate in 1672. The inventory showed a house and a wharf £90; a shallop £40; total £130.
     He is described as a mariner. (Wyman's Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown; New England Genealogical Register 20:142.).18

     Abigail Lawrence (408) was baptized on 24 Apr 1681 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.46 She married Edward Wyer (409) on 1 Sep 1684 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.47 She married Nicolas Lawrence Jr. (410), son of Nicholas Lawrence (2096) and Mary (--?--) (2097), on 25 Dec 1689 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.48 She married Edward Clifford (411) circa 1712 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.49 She died before 14 Apr 1729 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.50

DAVID3 LAWRENCE (395) (John2, Henry1)54 was born at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.55 He married Sarah Whittemore (394), daughter of Samuel Whittemore (430) and Hannah Rice (437), on 3 Feb 1700/1 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.56 He died after 1702 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.57

WILLIAM3 LAWRENCE (398) (John2, Henry1)60 was born before 1670 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.61 He married Sarah Whittemore (394), daughter of Samuel Whittemore (430) and Hannah Rice (437), after 1702 at Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.62 He died on 24 May 1720 at Providence, Providence, Rhode Island.63
     He was probably the son of John Lawrence and grandson of Henry Lawrence of Charlestown, MA. In 1717 he gave a paper which defended the title of real estate against the heirs of David Lawrence, his wife's first husband, and presumably his brother. David Lawrence was living in 1702. (Wyman's Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown, p. 606.)
     By a first marriage he had a son William, to whom he gave land in his will and for whom he did not provide a guardian. This marriage probably occurred before 1699 as the will was made in 1720. He married Sarah Whittemore, widow of David Lawrence, as his second wife and by her had three daughters, none of whom was of age when he died, and a posthumous son, Uriah. He made a will at Providence, RI, on 23 May 1720 and died on 24 May 1720. Nothing else appears of record at Providence; and nothing appears of the land he left, other that an arrangement made later by his widow.      URIAH LAWRENCE was a posthumous son of William and Sarah Whittemore Lawrence, and was born 25 Dec 1720. He married Mary Clark 15 April 1743.

     Lydia, born 2 Jul 1768, married Dr. John D. Bull, died 6 Jul 1813.
     Uriah Lawrence was at Charlestown, MA, in March 1735/6, when his uncle, Samuel Whittemore, was made his guardian. In 1766 he bought 500 acres of land, for 1000 pounds, in the Oblong. This land is now in the town of North East, Dutchess County, NY. He died 30 Nov 1803 and his wife died a little less than a year later. Both are buried at Spencer's Corners (North East), NY, and their tombstones were in excellent preservation in 1904. In the same cemetary lie buried their son, Uriah, and infant grandchild, Mary (daughter of David Lawrence), their son Martin, and their daughters Mary Hartwell, Elizabeth Hill, Phebe Bull, and their granddaughter, Mrs. Loraine Lawrence Jones.82 FAMILY OF URIAH LAWRENCE
     In the will of Uriah Lawrence, dated 10 August 1800, legacies are given to sons David, Clark and Chauncey; to grandsons Merchant and Roswell Lawrence; to granddaughters, Rollens Brooks, Jand and Fannie Alley and Phebe Lawrence; to grandsons Uriah and Hiram Lawrence; to daughter Elizabeth and to two great-grandchildren 'of Phebe Skinner.' The residue of the estate was given to daughters Mary, Sarah, Olive and Lydia. His son, Martin, then living in North East, is not mentioned in the will (He probably recieved his inheritance earlier. In the Dutchess County records office in Poughkeepsie, NY, I noticed that some land was transferred from Uriah to Martin just prior to Uriah's death, but I did not read the deed in detail -- D.M.L.).
     I know nothing of above Merchant, Roswell and Phebe Lawrence, Uriah and Hiram Lawrence, Rollens Brooks and Fannie Alley.
     I know nothing of the descendants of Jonathan Lawrence, Elizabeth Lawrence Hill, Olive Lawrence Smith and Clark Lawrence. There was a Clarke Lawrence living at Tinmouth, Rutland County, VT, in 1790. There was in his family (including himself) two white males over 16 years of age and five females. I have always thought that Jonathan moved to Stillwater, NY, about the same time as his brother David, in 1790. A Jonathan Lawrence was buried a mile or so northwest of the village, but the tombstone is no longer extant.
     Sarah Lawrence Wright had a granddaughter, Mrs. Sally B. Dake, of Berea, OH.
     Chauncey Lawrence had a son, Horace, and left descendants in the neighborhood of Springfield and Yellow Springs, OH.
     The descendants of Mary Lawrence Hartwell are given in the printed genealogies of the Hartwell and Winchell families.
     Martin Lawrence had seven daughters and one son. Their first names began with 'L'. The descendants of Lydia and Laura are given in the Winchell book. Loraine married Horace Jones, and lived at Millerton, NY, near the old homestead. I think she had descendants there named Benedict. Lamira married a Reed and had a son, A. E. Reed, who now lives in Mansfield, CT, and has in his possession Uriah and Martin Lawrence's family Bible. Lorinda married Jesse Dunning and had one son and two daughters.
     Phebe Lawrence married Dr. John Bull. I give her descendants on another sheet.
     Lydia Lawrence married Dr. John D. Bull, your ancestor. Phebe Lawrence Bull and Lydia Lawrence Bull ar both buried in the cemetary at Spencer's Grove, near Millerton, NY.
     A family named Dakin lives on a portion of the old homestead. The location of the residence of Uriah Lawrence is pointed out, but the house is gone.83
     Uriah Lawrence was born on 25 Dec 1720. He married Mary Clark 13 Apr 1743. He died at North East, Dutchess County, NY, 30 Nov 1803. He had seven daughters and six sons. (Uriah Lawrence's family bible, in the possession of A.E. Reed, Mansfield, CT.)
     He was a posthumous son of William Lawrence of Providence, RI, and his second wife, Sarah Whittemore Lawrence. (Records of Middlesex County, MA. Guardianship papers of Uriah Lawrence and the will of Sarah Whittemore Lawrence.)
     His uncle, Samuel Whittemore, was chosen by him as guardian on 12 Mar 1735/36 and gave bond of 1,000 pounds. In the bond he is stated to be the son of William Lawrence of Providence of Providence, RI, and in the order he is called the son of "Widow Sarah Lawrence," (record reads 'Widowsarah Lawrence'). The bond recites that he was then in his sixteenth year. (Records of Middlesex County, MA.)
     He purchased lot 73 in the 'Oblong,' containing five hundred acres of land for £1,000 on 22 Oct 1766. The land is on the east side of the town of North East, Dutchess County, NY. (Real estate records of Dutchess County, NY. Deed of Ebeneezer Hopkins to Uriah Lawrence, Liber 5, p. 60.)
     He was buried in the churchyard at Spencer's Corners, North East, NY. The tombstone of white marble was in good preservation in 1903 (and still in good preservation in 1990 -- D.M.L.). The inscription is "Memento mori. In memory of Uriah Lawrence, Esq., who died 30th November 1803 in the 83d year of his age."
     A couplet at the bottom of the stone has become undecipherable through age. His wife, his son Uriah, and an infant grandchild, daughter of David Lawrence, are buried by his side. In other parts of the cemetary are buried his son, Martin, and his daughters, Mary Hartley, Elizabeth Hill, Phoebe Bull, Lydia Bull, and his granddaughter, Mrs. Loraine Lawrence Jones.
     A part of his farm is occupied (in 1903) by a Dakin Family. No trace remains of his house.
     He signed the 'General Association' in June (July) 1775 and was on the committee to circulate it in his part of the precinct. (Huntting's History of Little Nine Partners; P.K. Smith's History of Dutchess County, New York.)
     His will is dated 16 Aug 1800. He gives £580 specifically and leaves the residue of his estate to his daughters, Mary, Sarah, Olive, and Lydia. Except for his son, Martin, all his living children, including David, are mentioned. (Will of Uriah Lawrence on record in Dutchess County, NY.)
     It is a family tradition that he went from Windsor, CT, to the Phillippse Patent, (Putnam County, NY,) before settling at North East. (Letter of A.E. Reed, Mansfield, CT.).84

10. MARY5 LAWRENCE (197) (Uriah4, William3, John2, Henry1) was born on 25 Dec 1743.101 She married Abraham Hartwell (198) on 2 Apr 1761.102 She died on 16 Sep 1807 at age 63.103

DAVID5 LAWRENCE (38) (Uriah4, William3, John2, Henry1) was born on 1 Jan 1747/48 at Of North East, Dutchess, New York.128 He married Abigail Birch (39), daughter of Joshua Birch (459) and Abigail Udall (460), on 2 Jan 1777 at North East, Dutchess, New York.129 He died on 13 May 1834 at Stillwater, Saratoga, New York, at age 86.130
     David Lawrence (38) was a Farmer.
     He was the second son and the third child of Uriah and Mary Clark Lawrence. He was born at North East, Dutchess County, New York, 1st January, 1748. (Uriah Lawrence's family Bible. A.B. Reed, Mansfield, Ct.)
     He married Abigail Birch, 2nd January, 1777. He served in the militia force during the American Revolution and signed the "General Association" in June, 1775. He removed to Stillwater, Saratoga County, N.Y. soon after 1790 and died there 13th May, 1834. He is buried in the Old Baptist Church, or Hicks Burying Ground, four and a half miles from Bemis Heights and three and a half miles from his old residence. The inscription on his tombstone is, "Sacred to the memory of David Lawrence who departed this live May 13th, 1834, in the 87th year of his age." (Memoranda left by his grandson, John K. Porter.)
     He deeded to his brother, Martin Lawrence, thirty acres of land in North East, 24th December, 1790. (Real estate records of Dutchess Co.,N.Y., Miber 17,p.554.).131 FAMILY OF DAVID LAWRENCE
     David Lawrence was born 1st. January, 1748. He married Abigail, daughter of Joshua and Abigail Udall Birch, 2nd January, 1777. He resided in the town of North East, Dutchess, N.Y., until about 1790, and removed to land he had purchased near the village of Stillwater, N.Y. He died 13th May, 1834 and is buried in the Baptist Churchyard a mile or two north-west of his farm.

     William C., born 11th March, 1779, died unmarried 17th October 1817
     Mary, born 10th November, 1780, married Elijah Porter 12th March, 1801, died 2nd March, 1845
     Lionel Udall, born 24th March, 1782; married his cousin, Ann Phillips. Lived at Hudson, N.Y., died childless 30th July, 1844.
     Laura, born 9th Nov. 1784, married Conrad Cramer. Died 27th April, 1852. Left descendants. Charles C. Ormsby is a grandson, living at Waterford, N.Y.
     David R., born 11th Nov. 1789, died 21st Feb. 1768. Resided at the Stillwater farm, formerly owned by his father. Married three times: 1st Sarah Mott; 2nd. Charlotte (Bull) Bird, 3rd. Eliza Gillespie. Had two sons, William and Zebulon Mott. William married his cousin, Augusta, and had children.
     Jonathan, born 23rd March, 1795, died 1869. Had a daughter, Augusta.
     Archibald, a clergyman and married. Lived at Woodville, Mississippi in 1850. He and his wife died there during the Civil War.132
     He bought a farm in Stillwater, one hundred and sixty acres in extent of Samuel Bryan for 500 pounds, 21st. Sept. 1790, (Saratoga County records Liber G. p. 473.) It is situated about a mile south of the headquarters of General Gates at the battle of Saratoga and commands an extended and beautiful view over the Hudson Valley. He sold it to his son, David R. Lawrence, 1 April, 1815, (R. E. records) Liber M. p. 473, for $3500 but his wife did not sign the deed. He is described in the deed from Byran as of Little Nine Partners, Dutchess County, N. Y. (North East Precinct was formerly a part of the Little Nine Partners patents.
     The house was in excellent preservation in 1907, as was his tombstone.133

12. PHEBE5 LAWRENCE (332) (Uriah4, William3, John2, Henry1) was born on 28 Jun 1753.145 She married John Bull (333).146 She died on 9 Dec 1788 at North East, Dutchess, New York, at age 35.147

     Phebe Lawrence, who married Dr. John Bull, had a daughter, Phebe, who was born 16th August, 1775. This Phebe Bull married Joseph Skinner, (Jon 5, Joseph 4, Joseph 3, John 2 John 1) 21st. April,1794, she died at Granville, N.Y., 4th Sept. 1798.
     Joseph Skinner was born at East Windsor, Ct., 25th March, 1772.

     Sally Paine, born at Kortwright, N.Y. 17th May, 1796.
     St. John Bull Lawrence, born at Kortwright,N.Y., 4th Dec.1797.
     Joseph Skinner married 2nd. Amilia Richarson, l4th Jan. 1805 and had a son, Eugene Franklin Skinner, who left descendants.
     St. John Bull Lawrence Skimier married Phebe Maria Mooers, daughter of Major General Benjamine Mooers, l6th Sept. 1821. He died at Washington, D.C. 10th July, 1872, and is buried in Oakhill Cemetery.. Georgetown, D.C. His wife, Phebe, was born in December
1800 and died 30th May, 1829.
     Children of St.John Bull Lawrence and Phebe Mooers Skinner:
     Mary Elizabeth, born at Plattsburg, N.Y., 25th May, 1823, married Charles Hascall.
     Hannah Julia, born at Plattsburg, l8th October, 1824, married Thomas Cox.
     Sarah Phebe, born at Plattsburg 20th August, 1826, married Henry Gould of Essex, 2nd Oct. 1849 and died l6th Sept, 1904. Henry Gould died in 1878 or 1879.
     St. John Bull Skinner married 2nd Julia Lowry of Burlington, Vermont. She was born 20th March 1906, and died 7th 1902?148

13. CHAUNCEY5 LAWRENCE (339) (Uriah4, William3, John2, Henry1) was born on 31 Mar 1761 at North East, Dutchess, New York.149 He married Sarah H. Clark (419) in Feb 1786.150 He died on 24 Aug 1843 at age 82.151

14. MARTIN5 LAWRENCE (341) (Uriah4, William3, John2, Henry1) was born on 13 Jan 1765 at East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut.154 He married Abigail Bryan (342).155 He died on 12 Mar 1851 at North East, Dutchess, New York, at age 86.156

     Mary Lawrence, daughter of David Lawrence, was born at North East, N.Y., 10th Nov., 1780. She married Elijah Porter, M.D., at Stillwater, N.Y., l2th March,1801. She died at Waterford, N.Y., 2nd March, 1845.

     William Pitt, born 9th July, 1806. A Physician. Died at Waterford, N.Y. 23 June,1833 unmarried.
     David Lawrence, born 2nd. June 1808. A physician, died at Pontiac, Mich. 20th. Jan. 1833, and is buried there. Was unmarried.
     Sarah Ann, born 20th March, 1810. Married Robert Losee 8th Oct. 1832. Died without issue 20th Jan. 1867 at Schuylerville, N.Y. and is buried there.
     Abby Elizabeth, born 25th July,1812. Married Ziba A. Leland, 2nd Nov. 1843. Died at Halfmoon Township, Saratoga County, N.Y. 1st of February, 1855.
     Cornelia Close, born 3 August, 1814, died 26 July, 1816.
Jane Lawrence, born 3 Oct. 1816, Died at Hudson, N.Y., unmarried, l8th July, 1841, and is buried there.

     David R. Lawrence died at Stillwater on 21 Feb 1868, aged 78 years. He was interred in the new Stillwater cemetary a mile above (??) the village on a part of ground nearest the Hudson. (Visited it Sept. 4th, 1874 -- J.K. Porter.) The inscription reads, "David R. Lawrence; died Feby. 21, 1868 aged 78 years, 3 months & 10 days.".223

He graduated at Union College, Schnectady, New York, took up the profession of law, was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1846 and a leader of the bar of Saratoga County, New York. He moved to Albany and became a Judge of the Court of Appeals, the highest court of the state. After three or four years of judicial service, he resigned and moved to New York City where he acquired a large practice. He was council for the government in the so-called Whiskey Cases of President Grant's time; one of Mr. Beecher's lawyers in the Tilton Case; prosecuted Guiteau for the murder of Garfield at the request of President Arthur; General Counsel for the Western Union Telegraph Company; and otherwise had a very lucrative practice as well as holding the reputation of being one of the finest lawyers of his day. {#13}-- Memorandum of John S.      "Of course I cannot tell so very much for I was separated from my immediate family when less than four years of age. My sister, Mary, was the oldest girl when mother died, about sixteen years old, and she took care of us all for about six or eight months then father took Henrietta and George Washington down to Saratoga County and gave us out to different aunts and uncles who raised us. We were not widely separated so knew each other better than we did the rest.
     "When your father, Stella (her daughter) and myself went from Saratoga to Kansas we stopped in Fairport N.Y. and visited Mary and Phebe who were married and settled there, living in the same house, a double one. We were there two weeks, (Stella having fallen sick on the way there) so became pretty well acquainted. Mary's husband was a Scotchman and worked on the railroad, a trackman. She married when about 40 years old I think. He seemed very proud of her and made a very kind husband but died not very long after we were there. Sister Phebe and her husband, Alanthon Pepper, have both died since, leaving their daughter, Alice, all alone since her father's sister and mother's sister both died in Jan. last.".456
