     Elijah Porter was a Doctor.
MEMORANDA Concerning the family of ELIJAH PORTER, of Waterford, N. Y.
ELIJAH PORTER first settled in Stillwater, Saratoga County, Now York. Here he married Mary, daughter of DAVID LAWRENCE, a farmer who had removed to that township in 1790 from Dutchess County, New York, where his father, URIAH LAWRENCE, was a large landholder.
Soon after their marriage, Dr., and Mrs. Porter removed to Waterford at the extreme south end of Saratoga County; and here they lived the rest of their lives and were buried. Dr. Porter became the best and most favorably known physician of the neighborhood. His funeral is said to have been one of the largest ever held in Waterford. He died of apoplexy while returning from a professional visit at Pittstown, in Rensellaer County. He was found dead at the roadside, his lancet in hand; from which it is inferred that he know the seriousness of the attack and was doing what he could to ward it off. His widow died four years later. Dr. Porter kept in close touch with his brother, Joseph, at Pawlet, and had regular correspondence with him. Many of these letters refer to the state of their mother's health; and at one period there is frequent mention of Moses, a son of Joseph Porter, who was then residing with his uncle's family.
ELIJAH, the first child of Dr. and Mrs. Porter, died in infancy.
MARY, the second child, married JOHN STRACHAN, 2nd. His father, John Strachan, was a well-to-do Scotchman, who came to this country from Aberdeenshire, aboat 1820 and bought a large farm on the west bank of the Hudson River, six miles north of Waterford. John and Mary Strachan had three children, all of whom died In youth. They were: John Strachan 3rd who had consumption was sent to Europe, and died on the Atlantic while returning. Mary Strachan 2nd, who was killed in a runaway accident, and Lawrence Strachan, who lived only a year. Mrs. Strachan survived her husband and children. Her father-in-law, with whom she resided, died a year before her.
LAURA, the third child, married WILLIAM SCOTT, a general merchant in the village of Waterford. In his later years he made successful investments in Michigan pine; and, when he died, was a man of large meals; although he continued to live the same simple and comfortable life as formerly. Mrs. -Scott died in 1881 and her husband died five years later when over ninety-two years of age. IRA SCOTT, their oldest child, studied law at Harvard University and in his uncle's office, and shortly after entering upon its practice moved to Marshall Michigan and later to Chicago, Illinois, where he was for years a Master in Chancery of one of the Courts. He and his wife now (1909). reside at Lansing, Mich. PORTER SCOTT followed his father in business at Waterford; but in the time of the oil excitement went to Pennsylvania and later to Chicago. After his mother's death he came back to Waterford and lived with the family at the old homestead. His widow now resides in Brooklyn, New York. ELIZABETH SCOTT married a Presbyterian clergyman, but did not live long after. MARY SCOTT never married and lived continuously at Waterford. She kept up the old homestead after her father's death. Porter had no children. Elizabeth had a son who married and had one child. The family has a farm near Lansing, Michigan. Ira has two daughters. The elder, SOPHIE, married JAMES M.. TURNER, of Lansing, Mich. whose ancestors, the Monroes, came from Pawlet, Vt. Mr. Turner was a large capitalist and in 1890 was the Republican candidate for Governor of Michigan. He was defeated, had severe financial reverses, and died in 1896. Mrs. Turner's oldest son has recently married and is a junior member of one of the strongest legal firms in Detroit. Her second son, Scott, is a mining engineer and is at present in Alaska. Mrs. Scott's younger daughter, ABBIE, married Dr. Howard W. Longyear, a son of the ,late federal Judge Longyear, and a cousin of James M. Turner. Dr. Longyear is now one of the most eminent physicians in Detroit. Dr. and Mrs. Longyear have two daughters living. The eldest, Esther, also married a Detroit physician.
WILLIAM PITT PORTER and DAVID LAWRENCE PORTER were both educated as physicians and died, unmarried and in early manhood. Dr. D. L. Porter went to Pontiac, Michigan and died there three years later. Dr. W. P. Porter died at Waterford.
SARAH ANN PORTER was brought up in the family of a maternal aunt in the northern part of Saratoga County, Now York. She married Robert Losee. They had no children. They lived at Schuylerville, N.Y. where they are buried almost under the shadow of the Saratoga Battle monument.
ABBIE PORTER married Ziba A. Leland, a former Judge and a graduate of Middlebury College, Vermont. He -,vas a widower and had several children by his first wife. Judge and Mrs. Leland lived some time in Bath and Auburn, New York. After the death of Mrs. Strachan they moved to the Strachan Place in Saratoga County and here they lived to the time of their respective deaths. They had two children, CORNELIA and JOHN. Cornelia graduated at Vassar College and late in life married Rev. Robert Scott, an Episcopal clergyman. Mrs and Mrs. Scott live at present in Florida and are childless. John remained on the Strachan place, is married and has five children, of whom Abbie is a teacher of Greek in the Now York City schools, Porter is a water engineer, Harry is studying at the Troy Polytechnic Institute, and the two younger girls are at home.
JANE L. PORTER lived most of her life with her maternal uncle, Lionel U. Lawrence, of Hudson, New York. She died and is buried there.
JOHN K. PORTER had a distinguished career. He graduated at Union College, Schnectady, N.Y., took up the profession of law, was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1845 and a leader of the bar of Saratoga County, Now York. He removed to Albany and became a Judge of the Court of Appeals, the highest court of the State. After three or four years of judicial service, he resigned and removed to New York City where he acquired a large practice. He was council for the Goverment in the so-called Whiskey Cases of President Grant's time; one of Mr. Beecher's lawyers in the Tilton case; prosecuted Guiteau for the murder of Garfield at the request of President Arthur; General Counsel for the Western Union Telegraph Company, and otherwise had a very lucrative practice as well as holding the reputation of being one of the greatest lawyers of his day. He had three children, all by hie first wife. MARY married early, went to Nicaragua with her husband and died a few months later. WILLIAM L. PORTER is the only descendant of Dr. Elijah Porter who bears the family name; and as he is unmarried it will probably become extinct in this branch of the family. He graduated at Harvard College in the Class of 1875 and became a lawyer, but has not practiced in late years, his time being employed in caring for investments. He has a house in Waterford and a large summer place on the shore of Schroon Lake in the Adirondack Mountains.
CORNELIA F. PORTER, the youngest child of Dr. Porter, married JOHN LAWRENCE, who, in so far as has been ascertained, was not a relative of her mother. Mr. Lawrence was a lawyer and became District Attorney of Saratoga County, New York. In 1864, having dropped the practice of law, he removed with his family to Chicago, Ill. to manage a lumber business of which he was a large owner. Mrs. Lawrence died in Chicago in 1868, shortly after finishing a trip abroad with her husband and oldest son While they were absent , PORTER, their second son was drowned in the Hudson River, near Waterford. Their oldest son: JOHN S. LAWRENCE is unmarried and is a lawyer at Grand Rapids, Mich., and Master in Chancery of the United States Court. He has been a member of the Police and Fire Commission and is now a member of the Library Board. He has been a Democratic candidate for Congress and at one time was President of the village of Newaygo, Michigan. He graduated at Harvard College in the Class of 1871. The youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence, MARY PORTER, married HARLOW H. LOOMIS, at the time Superintendent of schools at Waterford, New York. A short time later Mr. Loomis became a practicing attorney in New York City, where he died in 1899. Mrs. Loomis removed to Lansing and afterwards to Muskegon, Michigan where she now lives with her six children; the youngest of whom are twins and were born after their father's death.1

He was born on 16 November 1773 at Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA.1 He married Mary Lawrence, daughter of David Lawrence and Abigail Birch, on 12 March 1801 at Stillwater, Saratoga, New York, USA. Elijah Porter died on 18 January 1841 at Waterford, Saratoga, New York, USA, at age 67.1
