     "Of course I cannot tell so very much for I was separated from my immediate family when less than four years of age. My sister, Mary, was the oldest girl when mother died, about sixteen years old, and she took care of us all for about six or eight months then father took Henrietta and George Washington down to Saratoga County and gave us out to different aunts and uncles who raised us. We were not widely separated so knew each other better than we did the rest.
     "When your father, Stella (her daughter) and myself went from Saratoga to Kansas we stopped in Fairport N.Y. and visited Mary and Phebe who were married and settled there, living in the same house, a double one. We were there two weeks, (Stella having fallen sick on the way there) so became pretty well acquainted. Mary's husband was a Scotchman and worked on the railroad, a trackman. She married when about 40 years old I think. He seemed very proud of her and made a very kind husband but died not very long after we were there. Sister Phebe and her husband, Alanthon Pepper, have both died since, leaving their daughter, Alice, all alone since her father's sister and mother's sister both died in Jan. last."¹
