     The father of John Strachan II, John Strachan I, was a well-to-do Scotsman, who came to this country from Aberdeenshire about 1820 and bought a large farm on the west bank of the Hudson River six miles north of Waterford. John and Mary Lawrence Strachan had three children, all of whom died in youth. They were: John Strachan III, who had consumption, was sent to Europe, and died on the Atlantic while returning; Mary Strachan II was killed in a runaway accident; and Lawrence Strachan who lived only a year.
