"The story is about Uriah Lawrence (1746-1776) & his wife Joanna Kelle (1745-1768).

"Sometime in the spring or early summer of 1767 Uriah and his wife went up the trail that leads from back of Cairo Roundtop to Eastkill Valley to stake out a new home, raise a family, and make a fortune. To Uriah and Joanna was born on Feb 1, 1768 a son, Merchant Lawrence, but in the remoteness of their home, without medical aid, Joanna died. About the sum total of Uriah's possessions at that time was a motherless baby which, when six weeks old, Uriah put into a hunter's pack basket and retraced the trail which he and his bride had covered the preceding year, a saddened and frustrated young man, then 21."
