Richard Haughton

     Richard Haughton was a Shipwright.
"Richard Haughton, a Boston man, desired a lot," (New London records: Town Book No. 1).
Though called a Boston man here, the name of Richard Haughton is not found in any of the early records of that place, except in the conveyance of a dwelling house and garden to Sampson Shore, tailor, 27th of 8 mo. 1651, which probably was about the period he moved his family to Pequot. He had married a widow Charlet of Boston and the tenement had probably belonged to her. Haughton had a house lot granted on Foxen's Hill. (Caulkins History of New London, Connecticut, p. 75.)
He was in the fight with Uncas in 1657. (do. p. 127).
He died in 1682. This event took place at Wetherfield while Haughton was engaged at work as a shipwright on a vessel there. Of his children no regular list has been obtained. Massapeag Neck, a fine tract of land on the river, within the bounds of Mogegan proper, was granted to Haughton by deed of the Sachem, Uncas, on 19 Aug 1658. The laws of the colony prohibited individuals from contracting with the Indians for land; nevertheless the General Court confirmed the grant upon certain conditions, asserting as one reason for their indulgence to Haughton "his charge of children." We infer from this that he had a young and numerous family. Eight children can be traced, of whom three, Robert, Joseph and John are supposed to belong to a first, unknown wife, dating their birth anterior to the settlement of the family at New London (the name of Richard Haughton is found in 1646 among the settlers in Milford, Lambert's New Haven Colony, p. 91). Robert, son of Richard Haughton, died in Milford in 1678.
After the death of Katherine, wife of Richard Haughton, in 1670, he married Alice ___________, who survived him and became the wife of Samuel Cromber of Westerley (do. p. 299).1

He was born at Of Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. He married Katherine (?) circa 1663. Richard Haughton married Alice (?) after 1670. Richard Haughton died before 6 October 1681 at New London, New London, Connecticut, USA.

In 1645 she was the wife of Nicholas Charlet of Boston. (Boston records in the New England Genealogical Register 8:37.)
She married Richard Haughton, probably before 1651. By her first husband she had two daughters, Elizabeth, born 15 Jul 1643, and Mary. She died 9 Aug 1670. (Caulkin's History of New London.)
From the court records of 30 Jun 1664, "Mrs. Haughton summons Mrs. Skillinger befor the Commissioners for abusing her daughter in the meeting house. We not finding legal proofs hereof judge it meet that Mrs. Haughton tutor her daughter better and not occasion disturbance in the meeting house by any unmeet carriage to her betters hereafter; and this being the first time enforct it no farther," (do p. 248).1

The printed genealogies of the descendants of Tristram Dodge mention no daughter, Margaret, and there is no evidence (in 1907) other that Mr. Cooley's statement in the Rathbone Genealogy that Margaret Dodge, wife of John Rathbone, was such a daughter. No Rathbone interest is shown in the Dodge family deeds on the New Shoreham (Block Island) records.
Tristram Dodge was one of the original settlers on Block Island and had five acres of land. He was a fisherman from Newfoundland. He traded in Boston in 1648.
He was made a freeman on 4 May 1664. He was a sargeant in 1676. He went to Block Island in 1661 and was dead intestate in 1720. (From E.L. Smith, Genealogist, Boston, MA.).1
